Seachange

This installation took place on the 3rd September 2008 on Sandycove Beach, a popular bathing area in a suburb of Dublin. It is also home to James Joyce’s tower where he set the first scene of Ulysses, a story set within 24 hours in the life of Dublin.

350 brightly coloured gelatine forms were placed on Sandycove beach at low tide, this was a dawn to dusk project.

During the day, through the rise and fall of the tide, the pieces moved to and fro with the waves slowly dissolving being carried out to sea, some returning later at ebb tide as scattered fragments part of the daily flotsam and jetsam of the life of the beach.

Months of research and meeting were held with the Arts Office and the Harbour Management regarding the testing and safety of the materials used. All were made of natural food colouring and materials.

A short video was made based on the events of the day. This was screened as a large scale projection on the outside of a building in the campus of the Institute of Art Design Technology, IADT, in Dun Laoghaire on the 7th November 2008.

Seachange was commissioned by Dun Laoghaire - Rathdown County Council as part of the DLR Place & Identity per cent for Art Programme.
